The Path of Reconciliation - June 19, 2026

The sermon highlighted the painful journey of acknowledgment and repentance undertaken by the Methodist Church regarding the Sand Creek Massacre. This difficult, yet vital, work reminds us that genuine healing—both individual and communal—often begins with courageous acknowledgment of past wrongs. It is a path of reconciliation, not just with those we may have harmed, but also within ourselves and our communities, as we seek to align with God's justice. This ongoing process allows us to build a culture of healing, fostering environments where truth can be spoken, pain can be shared, and grace can abound. Consider where in your own life, or in the wider world, an act of honest acknowledgment might open a door to healing. It is through this transformative work that we move closer to embodying the love for neighbor that is central to our faith. May we be instruments of reconciliation, walking humbly on the path towards repair and renewed relationship.

Grounded in Divine Hope - June 18, 2026

Psalm 78 warns against becoming "a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God." In our own lives, and in the life of our church, we encounter moments that challenge our steadfastness—moments when history reveals uncomfortable truths, or personal trials test our resolve. How do we cultivate a heart that remains grounded, even when the path ahead seems uncertain or our past feels burdensome? The answer lies in intentionally setting our hope in God. It means actively remembering God's works—not just the triumphs, but also the persistent grace woven through every struggle. It means clinging to God's commandments as a compass, guiding us towards love and justice. This isn't about ignoring difficulty, but about finding an anchor in the divine when storms rage. May your spirit be renewed today, drawing strength from the eternal faithfulness of God, empowering you to live with unwavering hope.

Passing the Living Legacy - June 17, 2026

The mandate in Psalm 78 is clear: "teach them to their children." This isn't just about handing down doctrines or rituals, but about transmitting a living faith, vibrant with personal experience and communal wisdom. The sermon spoke of "passing the baton" – an act that requires looking back to see where we've come from, and forward to where we're going. What legacy are you nurturing and preparing to share? This includes not only the wonders God has done, but also the struggles you've faced, the questions you've wrestled with, and the grace that has carried you through. By being open about our authentic journeys, we equip the next generation with resilience, showing them that faith is not a pristine, untouchable artifact, but a dynamic, lived experience. May we empower them to set their hope in God, not by avoiding the complexities, but by navigating them together.

The Tapestry of Our Past - June 16, 2026

Psalm 78 urges us to "not hide" the stories of God's deeds from our children, and the sermon expanded this to include the full spectrum of our history—the glorious and the grievous. Our faith tradition, like any human endeavor, is a complex tapestry woven with threads of both light and shadow. Acknowledging the difficult, even painful, parts of our shared past is not an act of disloyalty, but one of profound integrity and love for truth. To truly understand where we come from, we must look back honestly, recognizing the ways our faith community has both uplifted and, at times, caused harm. This brave retrospection allows us to learn, to grow, and to prevent repeating past mistakes. It prepares us to build a more just and compassionate future, honoring all parts of our heritage by committing to the ongoing work of justice and repair. Let us approach our history with humility and hope, drawing wisdom from every thread.

Embracing Sacred Inquiry - June 15, 2026

Oh, my people, incline your ears to my teaching." This ancient call invites us not merely to listen, but to engage deeply with the wisdom that surrounds us and the faith that grounds us. Sometimes, true engagement begins with a question, a struggle, or even a doubt. The sermon reminded us that sometimes the "dark sayings" of old are riddles, not easily solved truths, but invitations to wrestle. Consider your own journey. Have there been moments of questioning your faith, or grappling with challenging aspects of history or theology? These periods of sacred inquiry are not signs of weakness, but opportunities for profound growth. Like a seed pushing through soil, a questioning spirit can break open new ground, allowing faith to take deeper root and flourish in richer, more authentic ways. Embrace the questions today, trusting that God meets you in your honest seeking. May your doubts become stepping stones to a more resilient and personal understanding of divine love.

Sermon Devotional - June 14, 2026

## Embracing Our Whole Story for Future Generations Like many who journey through faith, you might occasionally grapple with challenging historical truths about the church. Consider, for instance, a dark chapter such as the Sand Creek Massacre. In 1864, a prominent Methodist preacher led a brutal attack on Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, resulting in the bloodiest day in Colorado history and one of the darkest for our denomination. How could the same faith that offers such meaning and hope also be intertwined with such profound harm? This isn't a new question. Thousands of years ago, the psalmist wrestled with similar dilemmas, offering Psalm 78 as a parable for future generations. It calls us to "not hide them from their children," referring not only to the glorious deeds of the Lord but also to the "dark sayings from of old" – the riddles and struggles, the misdeeds and failures of our ancestors. The psalm teaches us that we cannot effectively pass the baton of faith to the next generation without acknowledging the full story, both the triumphs and the painful truths. When we face these challenges head-on, when we honestly engage with our past, we create a path for deeper faith and more steadfast hope in God. This intentional work, seen in the church's eventual acknowledgment and repentance regarding Sand Creek, allows us to build a more just and faithful future, ensuring that those who come after us can truly set their hope in God and keep His commandments, learning from our journey. ### Next Step: Reflect on your own journey of faith. What "dark sayings" or difficult histories – personal, communal, or denominational – have you grappled with? How has acknowledging these truths shaped your understanding of God's grace and your commitment to living out your faith? ### The Prayer: Gracious God, grant us the courage to look honestly at our past, to learn from our struggles, and to contend with difficult truths. Help us to share our whole story, both light and shadow, so that future generations may set their hope in You with unwavering faith and build a world that reflects Your boundless love. Amen.

Passing the Baton - June 14, 2026

This sermon explores the challenging but essential task of reconciling faith with difficult historical truths. Drawing on personal experiences and Psalm 78, the speaker confronts the painful legacy of the Methodist Church's involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre. She encourages both individuals and the church community to openly acknowledge past struggles and embrace a questioning spirit, arguing that true faith development and a hopeful future depend on learning from our "dark sayings" rather than hiding them.

The Tapestry of Grace - June 12, 2026

After striving to do no harm and actively doing good, Wesley calls us to 'attend upon the ordinances of God'—which we can understand as cultivating daily connection. We are not meant to walk this path alone, nor can we sustain ourselves by our own strength. Our lives are meant to be interwoven with God's grace, and this requires intentional practices that keep our connection open and vital. Think of those things that truly help you connect with the Divine. Is it the communal worship experience, delving into scripture, sharing in communion, a quiet walk in nature, or focused prayer? God meets us where we are, and there's no single checklist; instead, it's an invitation to find *your* unique ways to deepen this relationship. Today, dedicate time to one such practice. Let it be a deliberate act of seeking God's presence, drawing from the wellspring of strength and peace that is always available. Remember, you are not alone; God is with you, sustaining you through every moment.

Called to Bless - June 11, 2026

Once we strive to do no harm, we are then invited to actively 'do good.' This second rule from Wesley encourages us to look beyond mere avoidance and embrace the countless opportunities to bless ourselves and others. We are not called to be passive observers of the world, but active participants in God's ongoing work of love and healing. Today, open your eyes and heart to the specific ways you can be an instrument of good. It might be a kind word to a stranger, a helping hand to a friend, or a quiet act of service in your community. Perhaps it's also about doing good for yourself—nurturing your body, mind, or spirit in ways that allow you to be more fully present and generous with others. Remember, you are uniquely gifted to make a positive impact. Don't wait for grand opportunities; let your days be filled with small, intentional acts of goodness that ripple outwards, reflecting God's abundant grace.

A Foundation of Kindness - June 10, 2026

Before we can actively build, we must first ensure we are not causing damage. John Wesley wisely began his General Rules with the instruction to 'do no harm.' This isn't just about avoiding overt wrongdoing, but also about cultivating an awareness of the subtle ways our actions, words, or even inactions might negatively impact ourselves or others. Take a moment today to reflect on this foundational principle. Where might you be making things worse—perhaps unintentionally—for yourself, your loved ones, or your wider community? This self-examination requires honesty and courage. It might involve letting go of old habits, unhelpful patterns of thought, or critical judgments. By consciously choosing to 'do no harm,' we clear the ground for grace to flourish and for genuine connection to take root. Let your intentions today be rooted in kindness, seeking to minimize hurt and maximize compassion in every interaction.

Staying Our Course - June 9, 2026

We rely on navigational tools to guide us, yet even the most advanced systems require constant recalibration to stay accurate. A tiny daily drift, imperceptible at first, can lead us miles off course over time. The same principle applies to our spiritual journeys. Without regular reorientation, we can slowly drift away from God's intended path, from the values we hold dear, and from our truest selves. Today, consider where you might be experiencing spiritual drift. Are there small neglects, forgotten intentions, or subtle shifts in priorities that are taking you further from your spiritual home? This isn't about judgment, but about honest awareness. Just as a satellite corrects its timing daily, we too need moments of spiritual recalibration. What small, intentional practice can you embrace today to realign your heart and mind with God's presence? Let this be a day to consciously choose direction, anchoring yourself in God's unwavering love and guidance.

The Ever-Burning Flame - June 8, 2026

In ancient times, the altar fire was commanded to burn continually, a perpetual flame never to go out. This wasn't merely a practical instruction; it was a profound spiritual truth, a symbol of an unbroken connection. Today, we may not tend a literal fire, but we are called to nurture an inner flame—the flame of our faith, our awareness of God's presence, and our commitment to His ways. Just as the priests carefully added wood and removed ashes, we too must be intentional about feeding our spiritual lives. What fuels your inner fire? Is it a moment of quiet prayer, a passage from scripture, or a simple act of gratitude? Take a moment to consider what brings warmth and light to your soul. This isn't about grand gestures, but about consistent, loving attention. Recognize the small, daily efforts that keep your spiritual flame alive, preventing it from dimming or flickering out amidst the demands of life. Let this inner fire be a constant reminder of whose you are and the continuous presence of God within you.

Sermon Devotional - June 7, 2026

## Keeping Your Spiritual GPS Calibrated Imagine relying on your GPS for a critical journey, only to discover it drifts by just 38 microseconds each day. That sounds insignificant, doesn't it? But over time, that tiny daily deviation compounds into a six-mile error. Without constant recalibration, your GPS might insist it's taking you to your desired destination, only to deliver you miles away – perhaps even to a completely different state! This isn't a "set it and forget it" system; it requires daily, authoritative correction to function accurately, ensuring you stay precisely on course. Just as our digital navigation systems need daily recalibration, our spiritual lives are prone to a similar kind of drift. We can subtly allow distractions, neglected practices, or simply the busyness of life to pull us off course. God recognized this tendency in humanity long ago. In the book of Leviticus, God gave specific instructions for keeping the altar fire burning continuously – day and night, even while wandering through the desert. This wasn't about the fire itself; it was a powerful, daily reminder for a people facing immense hardship to intentionally maintain their connection with God, their identity, and their purpose. It was a tangible act of preventing spiritual drift. Centuries later, John Wesley understood this human need for ongoing spiritual maintenance. He outlined "General Rules" for growing in faith, not as a rigid checklist, but as a guide to living. He started with practical actions: "Do no harm" and "Do good." By engaging with these, we often quickly realize our own limitations and the need for a deeper source of strength. This leads to the third rule: "Attend upon the ordinances of God," or engaging in practices that connect us to God. This could be public worship, reading scripture, receiving communion, or personal practices like prayer, walks in nature, or even exercise – anything that helps you quiet your mind and connect with the divine. God's grace and strength are available to you just as they were to God's people in the desert. The path to a vibrant, connected faith isn't about perfection, but about consistent, intentional recalibration. It's about recognizing the small drifts and choosing to reorient yourself daily toward the source of true peace and power. ### Next Step What is one practice, however small, that helps you feel connected to God? Make a conscious effort to integrate it into your daily or weekly routine, choosing intentional connection over spiritual drift. ### Prayer Gracious God, thank you for your constant presence and the grace you offer. Help us to recognize the subtle drifts in our lives and to embrace the daily practices that keep our hearts and minds connected to you, our unchanging source of strength and guidance. Amen.

Steady Power - June 7, 2026

This sermon explores the concept of "spiritual drift" by drawing an analogy to GPS systems, which require constant recalibration to maintain accuracy. Just as ancient Israelites were commanded to keep the altar fire perpetually burning as a symbol of their daily connection to God, modern believers are called to intentional spiritual maintenance. The message emphasizes Wesley's General Rules—doing no harm, doing good, and regularly engaging in spiritual practices like worship, scripture reading, and communion—not as a checklist, but as vital ways to stay anchored in God's strength and love. It reminds us that we are not alone in our journey and that God's grace is always available to guide us back when we drift.

Heart-Centered Faith: Living as God's People - June 5, 2026

Being God's people is not primarily about geographical location or a list of external observances; it's about the orientation of our hearts and minds. God desired for the Israelites, and desires for us, to be truly His, living a distinct way that reflects His character to the world. This means cultivating an inner life aligned with divine purpose, allowing God's love to reshape our thoughts, attitudes, and intentions. Our faith is a journey inward as much as outward. While our actions are important, they spring from the wellspring of our spirit. Are our hearts attuned to God's presence? Are our minds seeking His wisdom? Let us strive to be more than just "people in the land"; let us be "people of God," deeply rooted in His love and grace. May our entire being be a testament to His transforming power, living out our faith with authenticity and joy, radiating His light from the very core of who we are.

Compassion for All: Extending Grace to Our 'Enemies' - June 4, 2026

The command to extend kindness even to those who trouble us is a profound challenge, yet it lies at the very heart of God's transformative love. When scripture speaks of helping an "enemy's" stray donkey or aiding someone you dislike with their burden, it pushes us far beyond conventional neighborliness. It calls us to see beyond personal grievances and political divides, to recognize the shared humanity and need in every individual. This isn't about condoning harmful actions, but about breaking cycles of animosity with unexpected grace. It's about remembering that every person, regardless of their actions or our feelings towards them, is a child of God. Where can you offer a small act of kindness or assistance today, perhaps to someone with whom you have a strained relationship? Such gestures are not weakness, but a powerful demonstration of Christ-like love, inviting us and others into a larger circle of compassion. Let us strive to embody this radical love, transforming our world one compassionate act at a time.

Let us strive to embody this radical love, transforming our world one compassionate act at a time.</itunes:summary>

Courage to Stand Apart: Not Following the Crowd - June 3, 2026

It takes genuine courage to stand firm in our convictions when the majority around us is moving in a different direction. The divine wisdom in Exodus urges us not to follow the crowd in wrongdoing or to pervert justice, even for seemingly noble reasons. Peer pressure doesn't disappear with childhood; it simply transforms, challenging us to align with popular opinion rather than with God's loving will. In moments of decision, we are called to pause and ask fundamental questions: Is this truly the right thing to do? Is it loving? Is it caring? Does it align with the heart of God as revealed in Christ? Discipleship often means choosing a path less traveled, one illuminated by integrity and compassion, even if it sets us apart. May we be strengthened to resist the gravitational pull of popular consensus, choosing instead to follow the still, small voice of God, trusting that true wisdom often resides beyond the loudest clamor.

Integrity in Speech: Guarding Our Words - June 2, 2026

In a world saturated with information, both true and false, the call to integrity in our speech is more vital than ever. Scripture reminds us not to spread false reports or engage in malicious witness. This extends beyond outright lies to the subtle harms of gossip, rumor, and unverified claims. How often do we pass along something we "heard," or share an opinion presented as fact, without pausing to discern its truth or potential for harm? Our words carry immense power, capable of building up or tearing down. As God's people, we are challenged to cultivate a spirit of carefulness and kindness in our communication. Before speaking or sharing, let us ask: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? When in doubt, silence can be a powerful act of love and integrity. Let us choose to be voices of truth and grace, reflecting God's heart in every utterance, fostering trust and healing within our communities.

Beyond the Checklist: Living as a Disciple - June 1, 2026

The essence of our faith goes beyond simply checking boxes. While spiritual disciplines and ethical guidelines offer valuable structure, they are not the destination themselves. Like a pilot called to fly the plane, our primary vocation is to commune with God, to nurture a vibrant relationship that informs every action. We are called to be disciples, not merely observers of a spiritual checklist. Consider where you might be losing sight of the deeper purpose. Are you engaging in acts of service because it's "what we do," or because your heart genuinely yearns to express God's love? Our faith isn't a rigid procedure, but a dynamic, living relationship. It invites us to constantly connect with the Holy Spirit, allowing divine love and wisdom to guide our path. Let us remember the "why" behind our practices, ensuring that every step brings us closer to God and to living out Christ's call. May we always be pilots of our souls, navigating by faith and love.

Clear Signals - May 31, 2026

This week, we kick off our new series, "Standard Operating Procedures," by exploring the balance between rules and genuine faith. Drawing an analogy from aviation, where pilots can get lost in checklists and forget to fly the plane, we examine how people of faith can also become "list-checkers" instead of truly communing with God. The sermon delves into Exodus and John Wesley's General Rules, emphasizing that our faith is meant to be lived out in daily actions, starting with the principle to "do no harm."

Rooted in Divine Love - May 29, 2026

Beyond all the things we might be *of* by circumstance or choice—our families, our cultures, our communities—lies a foundational, immutable truth: we are profoundly and eternally *of* God. This is our deepest identity, etched into our very being from the moment of creation. We are made in God's image, called God's beloved children, and gifted with the Holy Spirit not through any merit or earthly achievement, but by God's boundless grace. This divine origin provides an unshakeable anchor in a world of constant change and uncertainty. It reminds us that our inherent worth is not dependent on external validation or temporary successes, but on the unwavering love of our Creator. As we reflect on what truly defines us, let us prayerfully discern if those elements woven into our lives are truly life-giving. May we courageously shed what diminishes us and consciously embrace our fundamental identity: being wholly *of* God, finding ultimate peace, enduring hope, and divine purpose in this profound, sacred truth.

Threads of Grace - May 28, 2026

Our daily lives are often full of unexpected threads of grace, connecting us to others in ways we might not always consciously notice. The quiet joy of encountering familiar faces in unexpected places, a shared smile, or a brief, heartfelt conversation can gently remind us of our profound interconnectedness. These moments are beautiful, gentle affirmations that we are not isolated individuals navigating life alone, but integral parts of a larger, vibrant tapestry. We are known, and in turn, we come to know others, not just *in* passing, but as cherished participants in a shared human and spiritual experience. This recognition fosters a deeper sense of belonging, subtly transforming mere acquaintances into fellow travelers on life's path. It highlights the inherent beauty of community, reminding us that we are intricately woven into each other's stories, reflecting God's intricate design for connection and relationship. Cherish these small, yet significant, encounters; they are often tiny glimpses of the divine fabric binding us together in love.

Beyond Our Borders - May 27, 2026

The call of faith consistently challenges us to move beyond our immediate comfort zones and familiar boundaries. The early disciples were given an incredibly important mission: to be witnesses "to the ends of the Earth," a daunting task that required them to transcend their customary "in" spaces. Similarly, the life of missionaries reminds us that truly effective service and evangelism isn't about imposing our own culture or expectations, but about genuinely connecting with others right where they are. To truly share the good news of Jesus Christ, we must be willing to learn, to listen deeply, and to adapt our approach with humility. It means shedding preconceptions and embracing the unique perspectives of others. This spiritual journey invites us to become *of* the places and people God specifically calls us to serve, allowing our hearts to be woven into their lives and experiences. It’s in this authentic, humble connection that true transformation, both for ourselves and for those we encounter, profoundly begins.

Spirit's Imprint - May 26, 2026

The story of Pentecost marks a profound, paradigm-shifting moment. Once, God's presence was often perceived as distant, manifested on a mountaintop, guarded by specific boundaries. Now, with the sudden rush of a violent wind and tongues of fire appearing, the Holy Spirit descends intimately, resting on each person present. This isn't merely being *in* the presence of God; it's God being woven *into* the very fiber of our being. It's an intimate, transformative indwelling that radically redefines who we are. We are no longer constrained by physical location or old laws, but empowered by an inner divine fire that lives within us. This Spirit’s imprint means our identity is no longer defined by the place we happen to be, but by what God has fundamentally instilled within us. It grants us courage and freedom to go, to speak, and to live out our faith with confidence in every corner of the world, carrying God’s presence wherever we may roam. Embrace this liberating truth: you are wonderfully *of* the Spirit.

Have you ever considered the difference between merely existing *in* a place and truly becoming *of* it? This isn't just about physical location; it's about an intentional choice to engage, to know, and to allow ourselves to be woven into the fabric of our surroundings. Consider your own spaces: your neighborhood, your workplace, your church. Are you simply present, observing from a distance, or are you actively connected? To be *of* a place means to invest your heart, to care deeply, and to share in its joys and sorrows. It means recognizing that our lives are profoundly enriched when we allow ourselves to be known and to genuinely know others. It's an invitation to move beyond superficiality into authentic belonging, creating a vibrant, living community. May we seek to deepen our roots, not just physically, but spiritually and relationally, becoming vital threads in the rich tapestry of God's diverse creation around us.

Sermon Devotional - May 24, 2026

## Woven Into Grace Imagine a day full of unexpected connections, where every turn brings a familiar face. Recently, our pastor recounted just such a day exploring Milliken with his family. From the impressive new library to a local coffee shop and a busy playground, he repeatedly bumped into church members, school staff, and preschool families. It was a day of joyful recognition, culminating in his wife Emily asking, "Do you know everybody?" His reply, "It feels like everybody knows me," sparked a deeper reflection on what it means to be truly *of* a place, not just *in* it. There’s a significant difference between simply being *in* a location and being *of* it. To be *in* means you are physically present, contained by a space – like being *in* your car or *in* your home. But to be *of* something implies a deeper connection; it's what you're made of, what's woven into your very being, your origin. This distinction is at the heart of the Pentecost story. The disciples had been *in* Jerusalem, *in* the Upper Room, *in* Jesus' teachings. But on that pivotal day, the Holy Spirit descended, not as a distant fire on a mountain, but as a flame resting on each individual. This wasn't about being *in* a place anymore; it was about God being woven *into* them, making them truly *of* God. When you are *of* God, you are no longer defined solely by where you are, or by external rules, but by the divine Spirit living within you. You are made in God's image, called God's beloved child, and gifted with the Holy Spirit—not because you've earned it, but because God is good and full of grace. This inner reality equips you to live a life of purpose, carrying God’s presence wherever you go. **Next Step:** Take a moment to reflect on what you believe you are "of." What values, relationships, or ideas feel deeply woven into your identity? Are these things giving you life, peace, and hope? Consider how embracing your identity as *of* God can transform how you live, move, and connect with the world around you. **Prayer:** Gracious God, thank you for weaving your Spirit into our very being. Help us to remember that we are always *of* you, called to carry your love and grace into every space we inhabit. Guide us to live lives that reflect the life and peace we find in being truly *of* you.

The Breath of Life - May 24, 2026

Pastor reflects on the difference between being "in" a place and truly being "of" it, drawing parallels to the spiritual shift at Pentecost. While the Old Testament Pentecost gave the law from a distant mountain, the New Testament Pentecost brought the Holy Spirit to dwell within each person, making them inherently "of" God. This powerful message is beautifully illustrated through the story of missionary E. Stanley Jones, who transformed his ministry by embracing the culture and truly becoming "of" India. Ultimately, we are all invited to recognize and embrace that we are fundamentally "of" God, a truth that brings grace, life, and peace.

Beyond Staring at the Sky - May 22, 2026

It's easy to get caught in a posture of waiting—waiting for clearer directions, waiting for a sign, waiting for someone else to act. Like the disciples gazing upward, we can sometimes forget that the call to action rests with us, the inheritors of their mission. We are the ones blessed with God's grace and entrusted with the good news. The question is not, 'Who will come next?' but 'Where can I be God's witness?' Instead of waiting for a grand celestial instruction, we are invited to look inward for the Spirit's dwelling and outward for opportunities. Where in your daily life can you embody God's grace, show love to a neighbor, or extend kindness to yourself? Jesus did not leave us alone; he dwells in our hearts, working through our efforts. Embrace the opportunity to stop waiting and start living out your faith, confident that you are called to be a builder of God's kingdom, right where you are.

The Choice of Grace - May 21, 2026

God's grace is multifaceted and always present. Prevenient grace goes before us, encircling us even before we are aware. Sanctifying grace continually works within us, guiding us toward wholeness. Yet, there is a pivotal grace: justifying grace. This is the moment when, in response to God's perpetually outstretched hand, we choose to reach back. It is our conscious choice to believe, to affirm God's deep investment in our lives, and to accept the purpose woven into our existence. This choice is profoundly personal and cannot be made for us. It acknowledges our imperfections but rests in the perfect care of God. What does it mean for you, today, to actively choose to respond to God's grace? Take a moment to consciously affirm your faith, to reach back for the hand that is always being extended, and to rest in the certainty of God's unwavering love for you.

Trusting Beyond What We Know - May 20, 2026

Often, we might feel overwhelmed by the unknown, waiting for perfect clarity before we act. Like the disciples who gazed skyward, unsure of their next steps, we too can find ourselves hesitant, feeling ill-equipped. But true discipleship often means stepping out in faith even when we don't have all the answers. The disciples eventually went forth, not because they possessed a comprehensive playbook, but because they trusted in divine provision. They relied on the Holy Spirit's presence to guide them through challenges and uncertainties. This week, consider an area of your life where you might be waiting for certainty. Can you lean into the assurance that God's Spirit is with you, even in the midst of not knowing? Embrace the wisdom that some lessons are learned 'on the job,' through experience, guided by faith and the ever-present grace of God.

Stepping into Your Calling - May 18, 2026

Consider the profound moment of transition the first disciples faced. After years of walking with Jesus, learning directly from him, they were suddenly called to carry on his ministry themselves. This wasn't a casual invitation; it was a spiritual graduation, a shift from student to active participant. We too are called to such a transition. Having received God's love and teaching, the call now is to embrace our own unique role in God's unfolding story. It means taking what we have learned and applying it, not just observing from the sidelines. What does it mean for you to step into your spiritual calling this week? What gifts, insights, or experiences has God given you that are now meant to be shared? Embrace this moment as an opportunity to put your faith into action, trusting that you are equipped for the path ahead. The Holy Spirit empowers us for this active discipleship, guiding our every step.

Sermon Devotional - May 17, 2026

## Beyond Staring at the Sky Do you remember a time when you realized a simple task you always assumed someone else would handle was suddenly *your* responsibility? Maybe it was after a significant transition, like graduating and moving away from home. I recall a friend in college who, semester after semester, drove hours home every weekend. When asked why, he simply stated, "That's how I get my laundry done." He had genuinely never learned how to do it himself, expecting his mother to continue taking care of this basic need. It was his "graduation moment" in a surprising way – a realization that it was time to take on the everyday tasks of independent living. This moment of transition mirrors what the disciples experienced after Jesus’ ascension, their "graduation day" into a new phase of ministry. Like our college friend, they were still "staring at the sky," waiting for Jesus to do the heavy lifting, asking if he would *now* restore the kingdom to Israel. But Jesus had a different message for them: "It is not for you to know the times... But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses." The responsibility shifted from the singular "You" (Jesus) to the plural "You all." They were called to be active "witnesses," a term rooted in the Greek word *martyr*, signifying a commitment that could be costly and risky. This is where God invites us into what we in the Wesleyan tradition call Justifying Grace. Prevenient grace is God's hand always outstretched to us, and sanctifying grace is God holding our hand through difficult times. But Justifying Grace is *our* choice to reach back, to grasp that extended hand. It's the moment we choose to believe, to embrace our purpose, and to move from passively "staring at the sky" to actively living out our faith. We don't need all the answers or a perfect playbook. We go with what we have, trusting that the Spirit is with us, empowering us to be God's grace and love in the world. **Next Step:** Reflect on an area of your life or faith where you might be "staring at the sky," waiting for something to happen. How might God be inviting you to "reach back" and become an active witness in that space? **Prayer:** Gracious God, thank you for your unending grace that surrounds us and empowers us. Give us the courage to stop gazing at the sky, to take hold of your outstretched hand, and to boldly be your witnesses in our homes, communities, and to the ends of the Earth, trusting in your Spirit’s unfailing presence. Amen.

Amen.</itunes:summary>

Embracing the Path of Grace - May 15, 2026

The path to reconciliation and deep peace begins with understanding God's profound grace towards us. We are called to be "kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you." This divine model of forgiveness acknowledges our imperfections and offers boundless grace. Just as we have all fallen short and experienced the need for forgiveness, so too are others in need of our understanding and grace. This doesn't mean condoning harm, but recognizing the shared human journey of error and redemption. When we extend forgiveness, we release burdens—not just for others, but for ourselves. It is a powerful act of restorative justice, knitting together what has been torn apart. May you walk today in the assurance of God's forgiveness for you, and in that same spirit, open your heart to offer grace and seek reconciliation in your relationships, embodying the love that constantly seeks to build up.

The Deep Well of Empathy - May 13, 2026

The ancient understanding of "tenderheartedness" was not about a superficial sentiment, but a profound, gut-level empathy – a "good bowled" feeling, as the original Greek suggests. This visceral connection means feeling another's joy, sorrow, or pain deep within our core. It's a call to move beyond mere intellectual understanding to a place of genuine compassion. In a world of diverse backgrounds and experiences, cultivating this deep well of empathy is essential for true community. It means allowing ourselves to be vulnerable enough to truly hear and feel with those whose lives may be vastly different from our own. When we open ourselves to this kind of profound connection, we create space for understanding, respect, and mutual support. Let your "good bowed" self be attuned to the humanity in every person you encounter today, fostering a world where all can feel seen and truly heard.

When Anger Becomes a Compass - May 12, 2026

It is a human experience to feel anger, a natural response when we witness injustice or see the world fall short of God's Kingdom. Scripture acknowledges this, advising us to "be angry but do not sin" and "not let the sun go down on your anger." This isn't an invitation to suppress our feelings, but a call to transform them. Anger, when held too long, can fester, creating bitterness and division. Yet, it can also serve as a powerful signal, a divine compass pointing to where love and grace are desperately needed. When you feel that visceral surge of indignation, ask yourself: "How can this emotion fuel positive action? How can it motivate me to love God, neighbor, and self more deeply?" Let your anger inspire you to advocate for justice, extend compassion, or seek reconciliation, rather than allowing it to make room for malice. May it be a catalyst for good.

Speaking Life into Connection - May 11, 2026

Our words hold immense power. Scripture calls us to put away falsehood and speak truth with your neighbor, recognizing that we are interconnected, members of one another. Yet, simply speaking truth isn't always enough. We are also called to ensure that our words are always "good for building up," giving grace to those who hear. This means choosing language carefully, with an intention to strengthen, encourage, and uplift. Consider today how your words might serve as a bridge, fostering understanding rather than division. It's about more than just honesty; it's about speaking with a loving heart, even when delivering difficult truths. When we approach conversations with a spirit of grace, seeking to build rather than tear down, we honor the sacred bond we share. Let your communication be a source of life and connection, reflecting God's desire for wholeness and community.

Sermon Devotional - May 10, 2026

## Living with a Good Bowled Heart We often speak of being "tenderhearted," associating the heart with love and compassion. Yet, for Paul and his original audience in Ephesus, "tenderhearted" wasn't about the anatomical heart. The actual Greek word described being "good bowled" – pointing to our guts. They understood that deep empathy, those visceral reactions when our "hearts break" for someone, are often felt much deeper, in our core. This isn't superficial sentimentality; it's a profound, gut-level connection. Imagine the early Ephesian church, a diverse crossroads of Jews, Greeks, Romans, former slaves, and slave owners, all learning to live as a new community. Paul's message in Ephesians 4 was practical: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you." To be "good bowled" meant engaging with deep, internal compassion for those around you, especially those different or challenging. Paul even acknowledged anger, "Be angry but do not sin." He knew seeing the world fall short of God's Kingdom would stir strong feelings. The challenge wasn't the anger itself, but letting it fester instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to transform it into positive action, into a deeper love for God and neighbor. He reminded them – and us – that the Holy Spirit is present in every interaction, with every person, even the challenging ones. How would our conversations change if we truly recognized God's Spirit in the room? This call to listen, genuinely hear another's truth, and respond with grace, is about building up, not tearing down. It's about speaking truth in love, offering wisdom not to assert dominance, but to uplift and restore, just as God lovingly shares truth to build us up and offers us forgiveness for our own imperfections. This week, consider how you might become more "good bowled" in your interactions. Where can you extend visceral, genuine compassion? When faced with differences or frustrations, how can you acknowledge your feelings, then invite the Holy Spirit to transform them into kindness, forgiveness, or grace? Gracious God, open our guts and our hearts to the deep compassion You call us to embody. Help us to see Your Spirit in every interaction, guiding us to listen, to speak truth in love, and to offer forgiveness as You have so freely offered it to us. Amen.

Our Divine Need for Rest - May 8, 2026

From the very beginning of creation, rest was established as a divine principle. Even God, after the immense work of creation, rested on the seventh day, not out of weariness, but to behold and bless all that had been made. This sacred rhythm of work and rest is woven into the fabric of existence, and deeply into our own human nature. We are not simply machines designed for perpetual output; we are spiritual beings made in the image of a God who valued stillness. To deny ourselves rest is to resist a fundamental aspect of our design. It is in these moments of cessation that we regenerate, recenter, and reconnect with the source of our strength. Our Methodist tradition emphasizes good works, but these are most impactful when balanced with times of renewal. As you approach the weekend, embrace the inherent need for rest – not as a luxury, but as a spiritual imperative. Allow your body, mind, and spirit to find the restorative peace intended for you.

Beyond Distraction, Towards Connection - May 7, 2026

In our constantly connected world, true rest can be elusive, often disguised as mere escape. We might fill our quiet moments with endless scrolling, consuming content that occupies our minds without truly rejuvenating our spirits. While temporary distractions have their place, genuine rest invites something deeper: a spaciousness where our minds can wander, reflect, and reconnect. Escape seeks to fill every void, to prevent introspection. Rest, by contrast, creates the very void needed for spiritual communion and self-awareness. It's in this quiet openness that we can discern God's whispers, notice the stirrings of our own hearts, and truly listen. Today, examine your 'rest' habits. Are you truly disengaging, or simply trading one form of busyness for another? Choose intentionally to cultivate moments that invite deep connection, rather than just momentary distraction.

The Gift of Inspired Clarity - May 6, 2026

True rest is not mere idleness; it is often the very ground where insight and inspiration take root. We often believe that relentless effort is the sole path to solutions, yet history offers countless examples of profound breakthroughs occurring when minds finally disengaged. Imagine a perplexing challenge, something you've wrestled with for days, only to find clarity when you step away, allowing your mind to wander freely. This isn't magic, but a divine principle woven into our being. When we intentionally pause, we create space for the Spirit to move, for new perspectives to emerge. The answers we seek, whether for personal dilemmas or spiritual growth, may not arrive when we are 'banging our head against the wall,' but in the quiet of a cleared mind. Embrace rest today not as a reward, but as a vital practice for unlocking creative thought and receiving God's subtle guidance.

Cultivating a Quiet Space - May 5, 2026

The profound witness of Susanna Wesley reminds us that even in the most chaotic of households, a disciplined life of faith is possible. Amidst the constant demands of raising many children in challenging circumstances, she carved out intentional moments for herself and for God. Her practice of taking an hour, twice a day, with an apron over her head, signaled a sacred boundary. It wasn't an escape, but a purposeful engagement with her inner life and her Creator. This 'method' of seeking quiet can inspire us today. What 'apron' can you metaphorically place over your head to declare a sacred time for God? It might be a specific chair, a quiet corner of your home, or a walk in nature. The discipline isn't about rigid rules, but about recognizing our fundamental need for spiritual nourishment. By intentionally setting aside time for prayer, reflection, or simply being still, we cultivate a deeper connection with the divine and strengthen our spirit for the day's callings.

An Invitation to Pause - May 4, 2026

After pouring themselves out in ministry, the disciples returned to Jesus, no doubt weary yet exhilarated by all they had done. His response was not to demand more, but to offer a profound invitation: "Come away to a deserted place, all by yourselves, and rest a while." This ancient call echoes into our modern lives, often filled with endless tasks and demands. We too can feel the relentless pull of "coming and going," with little leisure time even to nourish our bodies or spirits. Consider this invitation today. What "deserted place" might God be calling you to? It may not be a physical journey, but an intentional turning away from the clamor. It's a sacred pause, not earned after all work is done, but a necessary rhythm for sustained service and spiritual health. Embrace this divine moment to simply be present with God, allowing your soul to breathe and find solace in His presence. Let His invitation be a balm to your weary spirit.

Sermon Devotional - May 3, 2026

## An Apron Over Your Head: The Radical Act of Rest Imagine a bustling 18th-century home, a parsonage overflowing with children—nineteen born in total, though only nine survived to adulthood. This was the world of Susanna Wesley, mother of John and Charles, the founders of Methodism. Her husband was often absent, sometimes even imprisoned for debt, and their home burned down twice. Susanna managed the household, cooked, cleaned, and homeschooled all her children in a constant cycle of life, grief, and chaos. Survival demanded a method, a disciplined approach to life. Amidst this overwhelming reality, Susanna found a radical practice: twice a day, she would sit in the kitchen, throw her apron over her head, and for an hour, no one dared disturb her. This was her time for intentional quiet, for rest, and for deep communion with God. You might feel a similar push and pull in your own life today. The world around us is every bit as busy and demanding as Susanna's, constantly vying for our attention. We are made in God's image, and even God rested on the seventh day. Jesus, too, understood this fundamental need. After sending his disciples out on a powerful ministry, only for them to return energized yet also grieving the death of John the Baptist, Jesus didn't push them to do more. Instead, he saw their need and invited them away to a deserted place to "rest a while." He recognized that busyness, even in good work, can deplete us. Rest isn't a reward you earn after all the work is done; it's a vital practice that recharges your spirit and reconnects you to yourself and to God, preparing you for the work ahead. It's not about escaping through endless distractions, but about allowing your mind to wander, to clear, and to be open to divine inspiration. Like Susanna, who found inspiration for raising her children, or the many historical figures who had breakthroughs during moments of quiet, intentional rest allows us to be renewed and strengthened for our daily lives and our call to love God, neighbor, and self. **The Practice:**
What might your "apron over your head" moment look like today? Consider intentionally setting aside a brief, undistracted time each day or week for true rest—not escape—to simply be present with God and yourself. It could be a quiet walk, a few minutes of silent reflection, or simply turning off the screens to allow your mind to wander. **The Prayer:**
Gracious God, in the midst of our busy lives, remind us of our deep need for rest and renewal. Help us to create space for intentional quiet, not as a luxury, but as a discipline that draws us closer to You and strengthens us for Your service. Amen.

The Open Table of Grace - May 1, 2026

The message Thomas carried to India was radical in its time: a single God who loves all people equally, transcending societal divisions like the caste system. This echoes the core truth of God's unconditional love and the expansive invitation of grace that lies at the heart of our faith. God's table is open to everyone—regardless of background, status, or past. There are no prerequisites for receiving divine love, only an openness to hear and receive. This truth challenges us to dismantle barriers of our own making, both within ourselves and in our communities, to truly welcome all as Christ welcomes us. May our lives reflect this radical inclusivity, extending God's boundless love and grace to every neighbor, inviting them to share in the glorious feast of faith and the profound peace it offers.

A Faith That Ventures Forth - April 30, 2026

Thomas's journey didn't end with his affirmation of faith in the upper room. His conviction propelled him far beyond his familiar world, inspiring him to carry the good news to the distant shores of India. This remarkable journey reminds us that genuine faith is rarely static; it often calls us to venture forth, to move beyond our comfort zones, and to share God's love in unexpected places. His courage in bringing the message of God's universal love to a foreign land challenges us to consider where our own faith is calling us to go. To whom are we called to extend grace? May we, like Thomas, allow our deep conviction to ignite a spirit of compassion and courageous outreach, making a difference in the lives of those around us, near and far, as we spread the enduring message of Christ.

Trusting in the Unseen - April 29, 2026

Life presents us with countless mysteries, questions about why things are the way they are, or why certain events unfold. Just as Thomas was shown *that* Jesus was risen, but not necessarily *how*, we too encounter situations where the "how" remains beyond our grasp. Faith often calls us to a place of embracing these holy mysteries, recognizing that we are not God and do not possess ultimate perspective. We cannot know all that has been or all that will be. There is a profound freedom in acknowledging the limits of our comprehension, and in resting in the assurance that God's wisdom and love encompass all that we cannot know, even the deepest unknowns. This trust allows us to live with open hands and hearts, accepting that some things will remain unanswerable, yet confident that God is always with us, holding all things in divine care and weaving them into a larger, glorious plan.
